Despite a reputation for student apathy, on Thursday 22nd January 2009, thousands showed up to protest the governor's budget cuts. This was by far the largest student protest in recent history, and Southern Nevada was well represented by its local schools. Students from Kindergarten through 12th grade, College of Southern Nevada, Nevada State College and UNLV showed up in droves to be heard.

Since this rally, we have had several follow up events. Students from all over the state converged upon the State Legislature to testify to the joint committee of the Assembly Ways & Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee. For over three hours, student representatives from every higher education institution in the state spoke on behalf of saving education's funding. Because of STUDENT activism, this committee granted an additional three hours for further testimony, which took place on March 13, 2009.

Our next event is planned for Thursday March 26th, 2009 at 6:00pm. Although we have made advances in our fight, it is far from over. Legislators need to know that we support them when they support education. This rally will feature a greater emphasis on students' voices.

Our last rally was the largest protest event in Nevada in several decades. Let's make the next one even better.
