Further information is available on the event's Facebook page

The State of Nevada is facing an unprecedented budgetary crisis due to the economic downturn. Because of the $1.5 billion shortfall in the state’s budget for the next biennium, education’s funding in on the chopping block. Already weakened by previous cuts (starting in 2007), the education system is no longer able to absorb further reductions. Further cuts will cripple the education system statewide, and will affect all students in the following ways:

  • Potential tuition increases
  • Fewer classes available
  • Increased class sizes
  • Additional layoffs of top-notch teachers and staff
  • Elimination of entire degree programs
  • Reduced student services such as Financial Aid, Advising, Tutoring and Library Access
  • Diminished student activities and events, including athletics
  • Thousands of Nevada students turned away due to enrollment caps

Should further cuts take place, the education system will no longer be able to fulfill its mission of educating the residents of the State of Nevada. Nevada already ranks at the bottom of education systems nationally, and needs the support and commitment of the legislature to improve our education system, not dismantle it.
